Ok I admit it…Banana oatmeal smoothie isn’t an Indonesian drink at all. BUT it’s extremely popular in this country right now, so I suppose that counts for something! And also, Indonesia is a country blessed with tons of bananas of all shapes, sizes, and varieties, so we’re always looking for new ways to use bananas before they go bad.

As delicious as they are, finishing fresh bananas was always one of my constant problems. In the past, I often left them suffering in the kitchen, watching them become over-ripe at room temperature – at a ridiculous pace, too – and eventually tossed them in the garbage because they became too mushy too quickly. Poor bananas! Those were the days before I knew that I could save the bananas by freezing them in the refrigerator.

Frozen bananas are handy, and very easy to prepare. All we need to do is to peel the ripe banana, and then we can either slice it into rounds or cut it in half. Put the sliced bananas in a freezer bag and freeze them. When done correctly, frozen bananas will stay fresh for two to three months, or even longer.

Frozen bananas convert starches to sugar, making it taste sweeter than the fresh one. It’s wonderful for smoothies and desserts!

In this recipe, our wholesome banana oatmeal smoothie is made using frozen bananas. Three ingredients are all we need and it only takes 5 minutes to prepare. Just put everything in a blender, and voila! A thick and creamy banana oatmeal smoothie is ready for you to enjoy! As it’s already naturally very sweet, no extra sweetener is needed here.

This hearty smoothie is packed with nutrients and it’s great for breakfast. The oats are filling and it will make you full all morning. This rich texture smoothie also makes a quick and delicious snack or dessert.
