Description

Sambal kecap is an easy and delicious sauce made using sweet soy sauce, chillies, and shallots. It’s enjoyed as a condiment with steamed rice, and is also used in grilled and fried dishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 green chilies, small, sliced
  • 2 red chilies, small, sliced
  • 3 shallots, peeled, thinly sliced
  • Half a firm red tomato, deseeded, sliced into small cubes
  • 5 tbsp sweet soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp lime juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a small serving bowl, put together all ingredients.
  2. Gently stir until all is coated in sweet soy sauce.
  3. Serve immediately.

    Sambal kecap is ready

Notes

  • Compared to onions, shallots have a milder flavour. They’re preferable when available, but can be substituted with onion.
  • Lime juice will add tartness. It’s definitely optional.
  • If preferred, a tablespoon of water can be added to dilute the sweet soy sauce.
