This recipe is for a sambal that is meant to accompany Indonesian clear soups as well as soto, a popular meat-broth soup. Quick and easy, it uses very few ingredients and its main purpose is to enhance the flavour of the soup.


  • 15 bird’s eye chillies
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
  • Pinch of salt

Sambal Sop/Soto ingredients


  1. In a saucepan, boil the chillies and garlic for about 7 minutes.Boiling the chillies and garlic
  2. Blend all the ingredients using a mortar and pestle or food processor, to make a coarse chilli paste.Blending and pounding the ingredients
  3. Transfer the sambal in a small bowl.
